ADA — The Ada girls basketball team played a much stronger second half, but it wasn’t enough as they lost its opener 49-40 Friday night against McComb at home.

First-year Bulldog coach Zach Ricker said they gave everything they had to cut it to four late in the game, but the Panthers gained some separation when they needed it.

He loved the fight and the toughness that he saw, especially when they were down 12 or 14 in the fourth quarter. He thinks there are a lot of positives from tonight’s game despite the defeat.

Junior guard Olivia Burkhart scored a team-high 13 points, while senior guard Courtney Sumner bagged 12 and sophomore guard Lexi Poling went for five of her own.

Ada trailed 21-13 at the break after only getting four points in the first quarter.

The Bulldogs shook off the rust and got within striking distance in the fourth, but McComb countered and pulled away to win by nine.

Next up, Ada is set to play at Cory-Rawson on Tuesday at 6 p.m.
