LIMA — Lima Central Catholic outscored Kenton 17-5 over the final eight minutes of the game to pull away for a 42-27 girls basketball victory in the Wildcats season opener. The Wildcats got off to a slow start offensively, trailing 8-3 after eight minutes and 18-7 at halftime, before closing within 23-22 late in the third quarter.
UPPER SANDUSKY — The defense was steady, so getting separation from Riverdale on Saturday evening was just a matter of creating enough offense. Alivia Oney hit a buzzer-beating 3-pointer at the end of the third quarter to cap a big run that gave Upper Sandusky some cushion and allowed them to pull away for a 49-32 victory against Riverdale.
McGUFFEY — The Upper Scioto Valley girls held a 17-15 halftime lead over Vanlue at home on Saturday but were outscored 20-15 in the second half to fall 35-32 in season-opening action.
MOUNT BLANCHARD — The Riverdale girls basketball team was looking for revenge Friday night in the season opener against rival Carey in a non-conference game. They found it, defeating Carey 40-36 in a thriller that went down to the wire and was decided by free throws.
Kenton had a pair of players receive recognition on the Division II All-Ohio soccer teams released earlier this week. Kenton senior midfielder Landon Bartlett was selected to the first team, while senior forward Hayden Hicks was selected to the second team.
