ST. MARYS — Sidney Plott scored the lone goal of the game two minutes into overtime off a Jazmin Mendez pass to lift Kenton to a 1-0 win over St. Marys and give the Wildcats their first-ever girls soccer sectional championship. Kenton, which won for the second time in overtime in two tournament games this postseason, improves to 10-7-1 on the season.
McCOMB — There’s no question the Carey volleyball team has heavily relied on junior outside hitter McKenzie Row, the team’s most experienced returning player from last year, throughout the 2018 season. Row finished the regular season in the top five in the Northern 10 Athletic Conference in kills and among the conference leaders in aces and serve receiving.
ARLINGTON — Ada cruised by Ridgemont in three sets 25-11, 25-12, 25-16 to lay claim to a Division III sectional championship Thursday night at Arlington High School. Megan Light had 11 kills and Rilan Conley added 7 kills and 3 aces to lead the Bulldogs, who advance to district semifinal play against Arlington at 6 p.m. Monday at Findlay High School.
After an unbeaten regular season, the Kenton boys soccer got one final chance to play on its home field when it hosted Bath in a sectional final game on Wednesday night. The Hardin County Wildcats took care of business as they netted three goals in the first half and added four more tallies in the first 20 minutes of the second half on the way to a 7-0 win over their Allen County namesakes.
ELMORE — Woodmore’s Hayden Heidebrink scored on a penalty kick with 9:53 remaining as the No. 2 seed Wildcats held off No. 5 Riverdale, 3-2, in a Division III sectional semifinal match Wednesday in Elmore. While a match-deciding penalty kick often is disputed, it was the first two goals by Woodmore that were more controversial.
Still stinging after a 31-0 loss at Ottawa-Glandorf last week, the Kenton football team looks to keep its fading playoff hopes alive when it hosts Elida in the final game of the year at Robinson Field on Friday night. The Wildcats, who had an abysmal night on both sides of the field in the rain and mud at O-G, cannot have post season goals in their head come Friday night, Kenton coach Brent Fackler said.
WILLARD — The Ada boys soccer team claimed a sectional championship, defeating Willard 2-0 on Wednesday night. The Bulldogs, 11-6-1 on the season, received goals from Brendan Sheridan and Chris Reyes and as assist from Jon Allen.
