Strong fourth quarter propels Gophers

MOUNT VICTORY — Down 40-39 entering the final quarter, Ridgemont stepped up by outscoring Riverside 22-9 to earn the 61-49 Northwest Central Conference boys basketball win on Friday. The Gophers end their four-game losing skid and climb to 3-4 overall and 1-1 in the NWCC. The Pirates drop to 2-2, 1-1.

The Kenton girls basketball team rallied from a 15-point third quarter deficit to take a one-point lead over Celina when Keelee Barrett made the first of two free throws with eight seconds left in the game on Thursday night. The Wildcats only lead of the game was short-lived, however, as the Bulldogs’ Bailey Exman swished a pair of free throws on the other end of the floor after being fouled while going after the rebound of the second missed free throw by Barrett to lift Celina to the 49-48 Western Buckeye League win.

McGUFFEY — An 8-1 advantage in the fourth quarter proved to be the difference as Hardin Northern pulled away to defeat Upper Scioto Valley 26-19 in a Northwest Central Conference girls basketball game on Thursday. Hardin Northern led 2-0 after one quarter before the Rams outscored USV 14-10 in the second eight minutes to take a 14-12 advantage at halftime.

R’side slows down Gophers

DEGRAFF — Riverside outscored Ridgemont in each of the final three quarters on the way to a 46-30 Northwest Central Conference girls basketball victory on Thursday. Trailing 7-6 eight minutes into the game, the host Pirates outscored the Gophers 16-9 in the second quarter, 10-6 in the third quarter and 14-8 in the final stanza to pull away for the win.

Allen East outshoots Ada

ADA — Allen East outscored Ada in all four quarters to pull away for a 65-31 Northwest Conference girls basketball victory on Thursday. The Mustangs led 11-6 after eight minutes before outpointing Ada 14-2 in the second quarter and 17-6 in the third quarter to take a commanding 42-14 lead entering the final stanza.

Celina tops KHS grapplers

CELINA — Host Celina defeated Kenton 54-21 in a Western Buckeye League wrestling matchup on Thursday night. The Wildcats gave up points in six weight classes to voids due to not having wrestlers at those weights.

Downing selected as Academic All-American

Travis Downing

Kenton High School graduate and Ashland University senior Travis Downing has been named to the 2018 Google Cloud NCAA Division II Academic All-America team for his efforts in the classroom and on the football field this fall. Downing, the Eagles long snapper for the past four seasons, was selected to the second team.
