Ada’s Sumner wins DIII sectional

First at sectional

LIMA — Ada’s Chase Sumner is looking to make a repeat trip to the Division III state wrestling tournament in a couple weeks. The junior, who finished fourth in Ohio at 138 pounds last winter, took the first step to getting back to Columbus on Saturday by winning the Lima Central Catholic sectional crown in the 138-point weight class.

ADA — With an Ohio Athletic Conference tournament championship on the line, Ohio Northern’s Lindsey Black stepped up when her team was on the ropes. Black converted on a bucket and went 4-of-4 from the free throw line to give the Polar Bears a 61-51 lead with just under two minutes to go, propelling ONU to a 70-55 win and the OAC tournament crown.

Juniors step up as Falcons top Edison

LEXINGTON — With their senior scorers sitting with foul trouble, Riverdale got a push from a pair of juniors. Lexie Wright had 18 points, 11 rebounds and seven steals; and Reygan Frey chipped in 16 points, nine rebounds and seven assists to lift the fourth-seeded Falcons over No. 7 Edison, 60-51, in a sectional final Saturday at Lexington.

VB pulls away from Falcons in 2nd half

VAN BUREN — Trailing nine to Van Buren at the half, Riverdale was outscored 20-4 in the third on its way to a 62-29 loss in boys basketball action Friday night. The Blanchard Valley Conference loss closes out the Falcons’ regular season at 5-17 overall, 3-8 in the league.

CG edges Ada, 37-34

COLUMBUS GROVE — After outscoring Columbus Grove 8-7 in the third quarter, Ada trailed by a single point. But it was Columbus Grove who gained the upper hand in the final quarter, nudging Ada as the scoreboard hit all zeros, 37-34, in boys basketball action Friday night.

Area grapplers advance to sectional semifinals

LIMA — Ada’s Chase Sumner and Damien Cameron both advanced to the semifinal round of the championship bracket on the first day of Division III sectional wrestling competition at Lima Central Catholic on Friday. Sumner won his first two matches by pin at 138 pounds, while Cameron, competing at 113 pounds, had a bye in the first round before winning by pin in his quarterfinal match.
