Quick start propels Perry to sectional win over Gophers

Along the baseline

HARROD — Ridgemont boys basketball coach Nick Stuck said his team knew Perry’s plan of attack would be to bring on the defensive pressure early and often in Friday’s Division IV sectional final contest. Even so, the No. 10-seed Gophers didn’t respond well to the press and surrendered a 22-0 run to the top-seeded Commodores (20-3) right off the bat on their way to an 80-31 defeat and ending their season at 6-19.

St. Henry outshoots Rams in sectional final

COLDWATER — St. Henry outscored Upper Scioto Valley 18-2 in the first quarter and was able to hold off the Rams the rest of the way for a 64-52 Division IV sectional victory at Coldwater High School. The Redskins led 30-13 at halftime and 39-25 after three quarters before being outscored 26-25 by the Rams in the final eight minutes.

Next goal is state for Wildcat freshman

Noah Eikenbary

Coming into the winter, Kenton High School freshman Noah Eikenbary knew it would not be an easy transition going from junior high to high school wrestling. While there have been a few stumbles along the way, the move up has gone better than the 195-pounder anticipated as Eikenbary will be attempting to earn his first trip to the Ohio High School Division II state wrestling tournament when he competes at the Mansfield district on Friday and Saturday.

Wildcats to play Upper Sandusky for sectional title

After losing to Shawnee by 10 points during the regular season, the Kenton boys basketball team flipped the script on the Indians in Tuesday’s sectional opener, scoring a 10-point victory. The task becomes more formidable for the Wildcats on Friday night as they take on a 22-0 Upper Sandusky team that finished the regular season as the top-rated Division II team in a poll of Associated Press voters.

Wildcats stave off Shawnee rally

LIMA — After seeing an 11-point second-half lead turn into a two-point deficit with just under four minutes to play, the Kenton boys basketball season seemed to be on the brink of coming to an end. The Wildcats found the burst of energy they needed to regain command of the game in the final minutes, however, outscoring Shawnee 16-4 over the final 3:40 to pull away for a 71-61 Division II sectional victory at Lima Senior High School on Tuesday night.

Stover scores 1,000th point in Ridgemont’s win over Polar Bears

HARROD — Ridgemont gave up several good inside looks to Hardin Northern in the first half in Tuesday’s Division IV sectional semifinal boys basketball contest, and led by just a point going into the half. A defensive adjustment by the Gophers on Hardin Northern’s Bradlee Watts kept the Polar Bears from getting good looks in the paint, and the Gophers were able to make an offensive push to take the 64-45 win.
