Jon Cross of Kenton received endorsements from several area officials Saturday morning to kick off his fall campaign to become the 83rd District state representative. Before embarking on a bus tour of several communities in the district, the first-time political office seeker received the verbal backing of Hardin County Commissioners Brice Beaman and Roger Crowe, mayors Tom Seem of Forest and Mike Trout of Mount Victory, and Hardin County Sheriff Keith Everhart and Logan County Sheriff Randy Dodds.

Candidates for school board, village and township seats have filed petitions to be on the November general election ballot. Wednesday was the filing deadline at the Hardin County Board of Elections. The petitions must be approved by the elections board to appear on the ballot.

One countywide issue and a variety of local issues will be on the ballot when Hardin County voters go to the polls in November. The Hardin County Council on Aging is seeking the renewal of a 1.5-mill operating levy. If approved the tax would be collected for another five years.

There is a big difference in the amount of contributions in the race for the 83rd District seat in the Ohio House. Kenton resident Jon Cross has collected $78,000 while his opponent, Cheryl Buckland of Findlay, reports taking in $9,095. according to the 2017 semiannual campaign finance report filed Monday with the Ohio Secretary of State’s office.

One week before the filing deadline, there is a shortage of candidates seeking village council, township trustee and school board positions open in the Nov. 7 election. According to records at the Hardin County Board of Elections, five people have returned petitions to run for a council seat and only one candidate has filed in the entire county to run for a seat on any of the boards of education.

The deadline to file Declaration of Candidacy petitions for member of the board of township trustees, school board members, village council and member of board of public affairs, or certify local questions and issues including local option petitions for the 2017 general election is Aug. 9 at 4 p.m. in the Board of Elections office.

Candidates and governmental entities have just a little over a month left to get their names and issues on the November election ballot. According to Hardin County Board of Elections Director Sandra Bookmyer, candidate petitions for school boards, village council and board of public affairs seats and township trustee spots are due at 4 p.m. on Aug. 9 at the board office. The election will be on Nov. 7.

Two non-party candidates Monday filed petitions for their names to appear on the November ballot for Kenton city offices. Joel Althauser is a candidate to return as president of the Kenton City Council. Clint Sneary has filed petitions to appear as a non-party candidate for re-election to a council-at-large seat.

The leader of economic development in Hardin County hopes to take that experience to the Ohio Statehouse. Jon Cross, president/CEO and economic development director of the Hardin County Chamber and Business Alliance, announced today his plans to run for state representative of the 83rd Ohio House District in the Republican primary in 2018. The district includes Hancock County, Hardin County and a portion of Logan County.
