The Franciscan Friars at the Basilica and National Shrine of Our Lady of Consolation, Carey, have developed the theme of “Consolation.” The public is invited to attend Mass on Saturday, Sept. 8 at 5:30 p.m. and/or Sunday, Sept. 9 at 8 a.m., 10 a.m. and noon. Fr. Jim Sichko will be the celebrant.

The Ada Full Gospel Church will be hosting a 21st Century Revival featuring Rod Vincent for three nights beginning on Sunday, Sept. 9. The Sunday services will begin at 10:30 a.m. and 5 p.m., with the Monday and Tuesday services set for a 7 p.m. start.

Like most of us, I am looking forward to this Labor Day weekend. Who could not use an additional day off? But as it often happens while we all enjoy a long weekend we often forget the meaning and origin of the particular holiday.

From 1945 until about 1991, the term “Iron Curtain” was well known and in the news a great deal of the time. The term referred to a political barrier separating the former Soviet bloc countries from the West.

You may have heard the phrase age of anxiety to describe our times. Only a few scholars and literary critics know that it refers to W. H. Auden’s Pulitzer Prize (1948) winning poem “The Age of Anxiety.”

The Auglaize Free United Baptist Church, 11890 Ohio 309, Maysville, will be hosting “Homecoming” at 11 a.m. Sunday, Aug. 19. Guest speaker will be Pastor Dave Mowery and there will be a performance by gospel singer Steve Mosely.

Gospel singing will take place at 6 p.m. Saturday, Aug. 18 at Well of Grace Fellowship, 525 N. Ida St., Kenton. The featured group will be Testify from Oakwood. Church overseers are Ronnie Dean and Diana Scott.

The Gibbons Family will be performing at Kenton Full Gospel Church, 129 N. Wayne St., at 6 p.m. Sunday, Aug. 19.

MOUNT VICTORY — There will be a Victory Gospel summer concert from 6 to 8:30 p.m. Tuesday, Aug. 21 at the Community Building, 234 N. Washington St., Mount Victory. Doors open at 4 p.m. Appearing will be Dave and Sharon Liles with Barb McCarre, One Voice, The Victory Gospel Singers and Musicians Band and Janet Moore.

During this time of political turmoil we frequently hear the words “citizen” and “taxpayer”. As an American, do you think of yourself primarily as a taxpayer or as a citizen?
