The jockeys and their horses take off at the beginning of the the fifth race of the afternoon session of harness racing at the Hardin County Fair on Thursday.

With some county schools out of classes for the fair, the afternoons on the midway can bring many thrill-seekers. A short shower fell on the fairgrounds for a while late Wednesday afternoon and the threat of rain remains through tonight. Fair officials estimate the attendance at the fair is up over last year’s numbers despite the extreme heat.

Jamie Adams of Mobile Glass Studios fires up a glass owl she created at the Hardin County Fair on Wednesday. The portable furnace reaches temperatures of 2,100 degrees Fahrenheit. The studio staff is putting on displays throughout the fair.

The Junior Fair Steer Show highlights activities tonight at the fair. It begins at 7 p.m. in the Show Arena. It was another hot day Wednesday and the total crowd was estimated at 4,922 with a paid gate of 879.

The pork portion of the Dish Day competition featured kabobs this year. Taking first place was Elaine Hoover (let), who won with an Hawaiian Grilled Pork entry. Eighty-nine kids, ages 1-8 entered the Kenton Times/Painter Creek coloring contest at the Hardin County Fair. Keep Hardin County Beautiful started recycling at the Hardin County Fair 2017 and it was a success. The group collected 100 pounds of plastic water and pop bottles and pop cans.
