The Kenton girls soccer team scored early and held Riverdale scoreless the whole way en route to a 2-0 home win in Saturday’s showdown of soccer rivals.

The Wildcats got on the board in the eighth minute after Abi Temple won the ball back from a defender, then passed it to Ali Harpel who layed it off for Gabi Wetherill to blast a 30-yard screamer over the goalkeeper.

“They didn’t want us to beat them with speed,” KHS coach Wade Wetherill said. “They didn’t let us go over top of them, so we knew we were going to have to shoot from a distance.”

The Wildcats kept attacking in the first half, but the Falcons were forcing tough shots.

Riverdale played a better second half than the first, but was unable to find the timely goal they needed as Kenton goalkeeper Ruby Styer wasn’t allowing anything through, finishing with five saves on the night.

About 17 minutes into the second half, Kenton’s Kinze Sprang sent a long shot into the box that took an unusual bounce over the goalkeeper and in.

Riverdale’s Maya Frey created several chances for herself and teammates, but Kenton’s defenders blocked some shots at opportune times to keep it at bay.

“We’re doing a lot of good things but we have to piece it together,” Riverdale coach Scott Bash said about his young team.

Bash said they hope to take it up a notch when league play starts for them Wednesday at Ada at 7 p.m. Kenton is back in action today at home against Bath at 7 p.m.
