Ohio ranks 22 in U.S. for car/deer crashes Posted on October 3, 2017 0 COLUMBUS — On average, one in every 128 Ohio drivers will have an insurance claim for damage caused by a collision with a deer in 2017, That’s according to the annual deer claim study released Monday by State Farm. It ranks states by the potential drivers had of hitting a large animal, including deer, elk and moose over a given time period. Ohio was ranked as the 22nd highest state for deer collisions. West Virginia, at a 1 in 43 chance, was most likely to have a claim from a collision with a deer, elk or moose in the 2016-2017 study. The rest of the top 10 included Montana, 1 in 57 chance; Pennsylvania 1 in 63; Iowa, 1 in 69; Wisconsin, 1 in 72; South Dakota, 1 in 73; Minnesota, 1 in 74; Wyoming, 1 in 79; Michigan, 1 in 85; and North Dakota, 1 in 87. The average cost for deer-vehicle claims has gone up nationwide to $4,179 from $3,995. According to State Farm, the likelihood of colliding with a large animal more than doubles during the months of October, November and December during deer mating season.
