MOUNT VICTORY — As Charles Van Dyne began his description of the Hardin County Chamber and Business Alliance's Citizen of the Year Monday evening, his friend, Arden Searson, looked around the faces at the Plaza Inn wondering who the honored guest might be.
It was him.
"This years' nominee is one of those people who has lived in Hardin County his entire life," began Van Dyne, "and who has made it a much better place because he has. His quick wit and wide smile are a welcome addition to any gathering ... He is highly regarded as one of the best and most knowledgeable farmers in the region."Van Dyne went on to talk of Searson's dedication to education and his community.

Court considers whether youth will be tried as adult for murder of her mother By DAN ROBINSON

Meredith Poling sat at the defense table Monday talking about her school assignments with her counselor. With her hair braided in two pig tails, she looked like any average teenage girl. There was little evidence she was a "cold, calculated killer".
Poling is charged with shooting her mother, Michelle Murnahan, as the woman sat in the family's Mount Victory home on Aug. 31, 2006, and played a game of solitaire on the computer.
A hearing Monday in Hardin County Juvenile Court will determine if Poling will face murder charges as an adult or if the case will continue in the juvenile court system.
As part of the legal process, a mental evaluation of the defendant was ordered by the court. William Kluge, who represents Poling in the case, requested the procedures be done by Dr. David Tennenbaum.
The psychologist has extensive experience in evaluating juvenile cases. He testified his evaluation had included several hours of interviews with Poling, her family and reviewing the documents in the case.
