James Melvin, 84
Marysville

Services for James Melvin Ray will be 11 a.m. Friday at Underwood Funeral Home in Marysville by the Rev. Donald C. Moceri. Burial will be at the Oakdale Cemetery. Military honors will be conducted by the Union County Military Funeral Honor Guard.
Friends may call 2-4 and 6-8 p.m. Thursday.
He died Monday, Sept. 29, 2008, at Heartland of Marysville.
He was born May 7, 1924, in Kenton to Melvin and Esther Garwood Ray. On March 22, 1968, in Marysville, he married June Ann Dillow and she survives in Marysville.
Also surviving are two sons, Larry (Patti) Ray of Marysville and Randy (Ann-ette) Ray of North Lewisburg; three daughters, Crystal Ray of Marysville, Toni (Jeff) Bean of Columbus and Eileen (Cliff) Chamberlain of Kenton; a step-daughter, Amy (Jeff) Mouser of Marysville; a step-son, Timothy (Yvonne) Kandel of Mount Gilead; three brothers, Richard Ray and Paul Ray, both of Kenton and Ralph (Dixie) Ray of Bellefontaine; two sisters, Edith (Robert) Murdock of Lakeview and Helen Kindle of Kenton; two sisters-in-law, Margaret Foster of Columbus and Betty Mohr of Groveport; numerous grandchildren, great-grandchildren, step-grandchildren, step-great-grandchildren.
He was preceded in death by a step-son, L/Cpl. James E. Kandel; two brothers, Robert Ray and William Ray and a sister, Ruth Kindle.
He retired from Denison Hydraulics in 1986 after 22 years with the company.
He was a veteran of the U.S. Army and the Ohio National Guard where he served during World War II.
He was a life member of VFW Post 3320, where he served as the post’s first commander, a life member and first commander of Disabled American Veterans Chapter 55 and a life member of the Military Order of Cooties. He was also a member of American Legion Union Post No. 79.
He was a member of First Congregational United Church of Christ.
